Hendoku Iyaku is a Buddhist principle that means “changing poison into medicine.”

In Nichiren Buddhism as practiced by SGI, it teaches that even life’s greatest difficulties—such as illness, loss, failure, painful relationships, or the effects of past actions—can become the very source of personal growth and happiness. Rather than seeing suffering as something that only causes pain, this principle encourages people to view challenges as opportunities to develop wisdom, courage, compassion, and a stronger, more resilient life through Buddhist practice.

In everyday life, Hendoku Iyaku means facing problems with confidence instead of running away from them. As you strengthen your inner life through faith and consistent practice, your struggles gradually become the driving force behind your personal transformation, often called human revolution. Instead of feeling defeated or seeing yourself as a victim of circumstances, you learn to turn setbacks into valuable life lessons that benefit not only you but also others facing similar challenges.

Poison Into Medicine

I drank the night

Felt it burn inside

But something in me said

This pain can turn the tide

One breath

One sound

I won’t stay down

Every scar spoke my name

Every loss fed the flame

What was sent to break me down

Built the strength I found

I faced the darkest door

Didn’t run anymore

Every wound became a key

Opening the greater me

I found power in the fire

I found truth in the pain

What was meant to end my life

Now is life in my veins

I turn poison into medicine

I turn falling into rising again

Every shadow becomes my friend

Poison into medicine

I turn poison into medicine

Every ending begins again

From the fire I transcend

Poison into medicine

Every fear lost control

When I stood in my soul

Every storm that shook my ground

Made a stronger sound

I don’t curse the rain

It made diamonds from pain

Now the past that haunted me

Is the force that set me free

Every step through the night

Brought the sun into view

What was breaking my heart

Built a heart that’s renewed

I turn poison into medicine

I turn falling into rising again

Every shadow becomes my friend

Poison into medicine

I turn poison into medicine

Every ending begins again

From the fire I transcend

Poison into medicine

Medicine

Medicine

Poison into medicine

Medicine

Medicine

Hendoku Iyaku

Poison into medicine

I rise

I rise

Poison into medicine
