Kosen-rufu is a central principle in Soka Gakkai International (SGI) Buddhism that describes the ongoing effort to create a peaceful and compassionate world by helping one person at a time awaken to their own inner potential. The term literally means “to spread widely,” like a great river flowing or a bolt of cloth being unrolled, reflecting the idea of sharing the Buddhist philosophy of respect for the dignity of life throughout society.
Rather than seeking world peace through political or social systems alone, SGI teaches that lasting change begins with each individual’s “human revolution”—the inner transformation that develops greater wisdom, courage, compassion, and confidence. As people change themselves, they naturally influence their families, friends, workplaces, and communities, creating a positive ripple effect.
Kosen-rufu is therefore not a final destination or a perfect future society, but a continuous, everyday commitment to encouraging others, sharing Buddhist principles through sincere dialogue, and helping everyone recognize their inherent Buddha nature and unlimited capacity to contribute to a more peaceful and humane world.
