In Nichiren Buddhism, the principle of bonnō soku bodai, often translated as “earthly desires are enlightenment,” teaches that we do not become enlightened by eliminating our human desires, emotions, or imperfections. Instead, the very struggles, attachments, and challenges we experience become the raw material for developing wisdom, compassion, and inner strength.
Rather than viewing our desires as obstacles, this teaching explains that they can be transformed into the driving force for personal growth and Buddhahood through consistent Buddhist practice. In this way, suffering, negative karma, and earthly desires are not simply endured or suppressed; they are gradually transformed into the Buddha’s qualities of wisdom, freedom, and an enlightened way of living. This means that ordinary people, living ordinary lives with all their daily joys and difficulties, can reveal their highest potential exactly as they are.
BONNO SOKU BODAI
Mmm… yeah…
What burns in me… can set me free…
Nam-myoho-renge-kyo…
Sweet from the bitter… watch… watch…
I felt the fire, thought it was my cage,
Desire in my blood, karma on the page.
Tried to run clean, tried to erase the flame,
But the more I resisted, the more it stayed the same.
Then I heard a whisper deep in my chest,
“Don’t kill the storm—let it give you breath.”
Every craving, every scar I hide,
Is a door to a strength that lives inside.
Not broken, not wrong—just energy,
Waiting for the truth to set it free.
When I chant… I realign.
Turn the dark… into the divine.
Same fruit… different taste.
When love awakens… nothing goes to waste.
Bonno soku bodai—fire into light,
Every shadow in me shines bright.
What I feared… becomes my way,
Nam-myoho-renge-kyo—I rise today.
Bonno soku bodai—pain into gold,
Every story my heart once told.
Now I know… nothing was denied,
It was wisdom waiting deep inside.
Bitter fruit on the vine of my soul,
I taste the truth—it was sweet all along.
No need to run from the heat in me,
The flame was the path… the path to be free.
Desire becomes wings when I believe,
Nothing to destroy… everything to redeem.
Bonno soku bodai—fire into light,
Every shadow in me shines bright.
What I feared… becomes my way,
Nam-myoho-renge-kyo—I rise today.
Bonno soku bodai—pain into gold,
Every story my heart once told.
Now I know… nothing was denied,
It was wisdom waiting deep inside.
Nam-myoho-renge-kyo…
Sweet from the bitter now…
Desire becomes wings when I believe,
Nothing to destroy…
Everything to redeem.
