In SGI (Soka Gakkai International) Nichiren Buddhism, human revolution means transforming your life from the inside out. The term, introduced by the second Soka Gakkai president, Josei Toda, describes the ongoing process of overcoming deeply rooted fears, weaknesses, painful experiences, and negative habits, while cultivating greater courage, wisdom, compassion, and joy.
Rather than waiting for circumstances or other people to change, human revolution begins by looking honestly at ourselves and taking responsibility for our own thoughts, actions, and direction in life. Through Buddhist practice—including chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and studying Buddhist teachings—we gradually develop the inner strength to face difficulties differently and reveal our inherent potential for Buddhahood in everyday life.
Human revolution is not about becoming perfect or escaping life’s problems. It is about using those problems as opportunities to grow and becoming stronger, wiser, and more compassionate through them. As we move beyond selfishness, fear, anger, or the tendency to blame others, we become better able to encourage and support the people around us. SGI Buddhism teaches that this personal transformation can also have a wider effect: when one person changes for the better, that change influences family, friends, communities, and eventually society itself.
In this sense, changing the world begins with changing our own lives, and each person’s human revolution becomes a contribution toward greater happiness and peace for everyone.
