Eshō-funi is a central principle in SGI Nichiren Buddhism that teaches that our lives and the surrounding environment are inseparably connected. Rather than viewing ourselves and the world as separate, this principle explains that they are two aspects of the same reality: our inner life and our outer circumstances constantly influence one another. This is why Buddhism says that our environment often reflects our state of mind. 

For example, someone filled with anger or fear may perceive the world as hostile, while a person with confidence, compassion, and wisdom is more likely to experience opportunities, supportive relationships, and positive outcomes. In SGI Buddhism, chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the primary way to transform one’s inner life, and as that inner transformation takes place, external circumstances naturally begin to change as well. A traditional Buddhist analogy compares the individual to a body and the environment to its shadow: just as a shadow moves whenever the body moves, our environment responds as we change our thoughts, attitudes, and determination.

Watched the sky rearrange.

Same street, same walls—

But nothing felt the same.

My thoughts like gravity,

Pulling worlds into place.

Every fear I released

wiped the clouds from my space.

Body and shadow,

Dancing in time.

Not chasing the light—

Realizing it’s mine.

No victim of the scene,

I design what I see

When I rewrite my heart,

The world rewrites me.

When I rise inside… the horizon bends

What I heal in me… the healing begins

No separation… nowhere to run

I am the source… I am the sun

We are one—one reflection

Inside out, pure connection

When I change, the whole world moves

Outer world is inner vision

Every breath, every step I choose

Like a shadow follows form

Like the calm inside the storm

Every prayer becomes the ground

Where a brand new world is found

I don’t chase what I can be

I become—and then I see
